RALEIGH, NC— During the week we celebrate Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s, birth, we remember that the civil rights icon said, “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in healthcare is the most shocking and inhuman because because it often results in physical death.” Because of this Administration’s attacks on the Affordable Care Act, the number of uninsured people has risen sharply over the past few years, leaving 500,000 additional people uninsured in 2018.

With almost 30 million uninsured and tens of millions more who cannot afford to use the insurance they have, people are faced with choices like draining their life savings to pay for cancer care, rationing insulin, and skipping or delaying care or medications due to the cost. When uninsured and underinsured rates go up, so do deaths!

In light of the moral imperative to act while people are suffering and healthcare protections in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) remain under attack, dozens of advocates and activists will hold an energetic protest Tuesday, Jan. 21 at Senator Tillis’s Raleigh office, protesting his multiple votes to repeal the ACA, his “yes” vote on the 2018 budget resolution which sought to cut Medicare by $473 billion and Medicaid by $1.3 trillion. We demand Senator Tillis reverse course from the votes he’s made to dismantle healthcare protections and finally start voting to protect the ehealth and save the lives of North Carolinians.

Healthcare justice is also a women’s rights issue. Senators Tillis and Richard Burr recently signed a resolution with 37 other GOP Senators to ask the Supreme Court to reconsider Roe v Wade, which healthcare and women’s rights advocates vehemently oppose.

“We must stand strongly in defending the women’s reproductive dignity and our right to self-determination over our own bodies and futures,” said Tara Romano, the director of NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina. “We’ll stand together to say abortion must remain a safe and legal procedure that is a choice a woman makes in consultation with her doctor. Abortion is health care.”

Speakers include members of Healthcare for All, Y’all, a local organization dedicated to building grassroots power to pass Improved Medicare for All, and the director of NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina.

[Raleigh, NC] — At 5:30 PM local time, on December 17th, the night before the U.S. House of Representatives votes to impeach Donald Trump for his high crimes and misdemeanors, activists will gather at Bicentennial Plaza as part of the nationwide “Nobody Is Above the Law” rallies. The rally and march in Raleigh will be one of about four hundred actions occurring nationwide.  Well over 1,000 people are expected.

The mobilization is part of a massive, grassroots effort to ensure Congress holds Donald Trump accountable for using military aid to pressure Ukraine to interfere in our 2020 elections. Protesters will demand that the House of Representatives fulfills its constitutional duty by impeaching Donald Trump and that the Senate remove him from office for attempting to rig the 2020 elections. Congress must show that no one—including the criminal in the White House—is above the law.

Protesters will gather at Bicentennial Plaza at 5:30pm for a rally, then a short march around the Capitol Building for those who are able (vigil for those who are not), then another rally at about 7:00pm.  There will be creative signs, costumes, songs, and chants.

“The impeachment inquiry has clearly shown that the president of the United States has used the power of his office to pressure a weaker foreign government to help him personally in the 2020 election. This abuse of power cannot go unchecked! Our Senators must do their job of defending the constitution,” said Karen Ziegler, lead organizer for the Tuesdays With Tillis group that has been rallying around Senator Thom Tillis’ Raleigh office for over 150 weeks.

Activists will use #NotAboveTheLaw to engage communities on social media. Information about other events can be found at Impeach.org. The link to the event in Raleigh is here.

Rally for the Rule of Law, Tomorrow

*ADVISORY*

Rally for the Rule of Law, Tomorrow, November 19th at 11:30am

Impeachment Hearings Day Three. Now What?

Issue Advocacy and Activist Groups and Concerned Citizens Weigh In

RALEIGH – President Donald Trump pushed Ukraine to interfere in our 2020 election. He withheld U.S. military aid and a White House meeting to pressure Ukraine to launch a sham investigation into a 2020 political rival in order to hurt his candidacy.

More than six witnesses have corroborated the same set of facts: President Trump would only meet the President of Ukraine and release US military assistance if he got something of value for himself. That’s bribery. He was using his public office for his personal benefit. The Constitution is very clear that bribery is an impeachable offense:

“The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.”

Tomorrow in Raleigh, grassroots activist groups, issue advocacy organizations and concerned citizens will gather together to bring awareness to the third day of impeachment hearings. North Carolina needs support from Senator Tillis to hold the President accountable!

WHAT: Rally for the Rule of Law!

WHO: Law Works NC, Tuesdays with Tillis and concerned citizens

WHEN: Tuesday, November 19th at 11:30 AM

Tuesdays With Tillis, El Pueblo, El Centro Hispano bring attention to Trump’s continued war on immigrants and refugees

What: Protest outside Senator Tillis’s office by his constituents

When: Tuesday, October 8, 11:30 am – 12:30 pm

Where: Federal Building, 310 New Bern Avenue, Raleigh NC 27601

Who: Concerned North Carolinians, activists from El Pueblo, El Centro Hispano, Tuesdays with TillisCarolina Jews for Justice

Visuals: Large, diverse crowd; sidewalk march; interesting signs and art; some impacted speakers, music

The cruelty of the Trump Administration with regard to the treatment of immigrants has continued unabated.  This past week, an order was issued to deny visas for people who do not have health care coverage. This came as the Administration is preparing to implement a “public charge rule” to deny green cards and US citizenship to poor people.

The 325,000 undocumented people in North Carolina are threatened with raids.  50,000 people are being held by ICE or CBP, most in for-profit prisons. The human rights and constitutional rights of immigrants are routinely violated.  Despite the fact that immigrants are far less likely to commit crimes than naturalized citizens and contribute far more than they receive from the economy, yet the President announced that only 18,000 people will be allowed into the country from abroad next year.

Jeff Land of Carolina Jews for Justice, is among the speakers.  “ As Jews, we were taught to never let anything like the Holocaust happen again.  We know from our own history what happens next when people are targeted in this way.  Many of our ancestors narrowly escaped from conditions like what we are seeing today in concentration camps at the border and detention centers around the country.”

Protest at the Federal Building: Impeach Now

WHAT: Protest of the president’s crimes and demand for impeachment

WHERE: Federal Buildlng, 310 New Bern Avenue, Raleigh 27601

WHEN: 11:30 am to 12:30 pm TODAY Tuesday September October 1

This is part of a national mobilization.  Everyone will sign the following letter:

October 1, 2019

Dear Senator Tillis,

We appreciate that you took the time this week to listen to the soldiers and families at Fort Bragg.  This could not have been easy for you.  It would be so great if you would know that, having survived this difficult event, you are strong enough to continue to listen to your constituents.

It is true that the President is more popular than you are in our state, so we understand why you would think that continuing to defend him might improve your own political fortunes.

We also understand why you are afraid of him.  He is a bully who will stop at nothing to stay in power.  He is also fighting for his life and for the lives of his family.  All of them are deeply implicated in numerous crimes.

Now he and Senator McConnell and AG Barr and apparently the head of the State Department are betting that Trump’s ability to whip people into a frenzy of hate will allow them to take over the House as well as keep the Senate and the White House.

We ask you today if you really want to be part of this plan.  Have you so totally sold your soul that you want to bet your own life on such a fragile house of cards?  Will lies win in the end, or truth?  Will brute strength crush all voices of reason, and all songs of love?  Will the earth die because a few wealthy men are determined to continue to amass wealth by cultivating hate and false conspiracy theories and crimes?

It is not too late to do the right thing and to be on the right side of history.  Please listen to those of us who are crying out for the future of our democracy, which has shown itself to be extremely fragile.  And please try to listen to your own heart and your own conscience.  At some point it will be too late, and this time is coming soon.

Protest at the Federal Building: No President is Above the Law

WHAT: protest of the president’s crimes and demand that Congress hold him accountable

WHERE: Federal Buildlng, 310 New Bern Avenue, Raleigh 27601

WHEN: 11:30 am to 12:30 pm TODAY Tuesday September 24

The Raging Grannies, elderly activists in costume, will perform a song with the following chorus:  “Thinks he’s a king now, a delusion, and its his fatal flaw, sooner or later he’ll pay for his crimes, ‘cause he’s not above the law.”

Over 70 participants are expected.  Everyone will sign the following letter to Senator Tillis.

Dear Senator TIllis,

Surely you can see that the president must be impeached.  He has admitted that he asked Ukraine to help him hurt Biden, and in that connection he threatened to withhold military aid that had been authorized by Congress.  This is extortion and blackmail.  He is coercing a foreign power to open an investigation on a political rival, repeatedly asking a foreign government to do his dirty work.

This is exactly what happened in the 2016 election.  He has publicly said that he sees nothing wrong with this.  Do you?

This president undermined every single branch of our intelligence service, contradicting their findings in favor of Putin while standing next to him.

He blatantly encourages foreign leaders (and members of the Administration and military) to enrich him and his family by staying at his hotels.  This is a violation of the emoluments clause of the Constitution.

He goes out of his way to alienate our closest allies while displaying obsequious behavior toward foreign dictators and autocrats.  He clearly wants to rule the way they do, hinting that even if he is voted out he will stay in office.

He lies every single day.  He regularly engages in racist and misogynist rhetoric.

People are waking up to the climate catastrophe and public pressure to do something about it grows stronger ever day, yet he goes out of his way to deny climate science and make sure that methane emissions and car exhaust continue to escalate.

Your party so far has displayed an unwavering determination to win at all costs, no matter what kind of cheating and lying and selling out of American values this requires.  You took an oath to defend the Constitution. It is never too late to do the right thing.
