Climate Emergency, Election Emergency

Lady Liberty and other protesters with sign that says Climate Change is Real -No fossil Fuel -Yes to Clean Energy

We learned this week that not only is Russia interfering in the 2020 election, but the Trump Administration is actively helping them, notably by firing the Director of National Intelligence because his deputy briefed Congress about this. This continuing pattern of people being fired for for doing their job and for telling the truth speaks of an escalating autocracy, the literal destruction of the administrative state. Meanwhile, we learned that a PAC funded by #MoscowMitch is actively interfering in the NC Senate race and that Putin is apparently aiding Trump in the Democratic primaries. The climate emergency is arguably more important and urgent than all of this, but if we do not have free and fair elections in 2020, there is not hope that we can slow the escalating destruction of the planet. We are proud to welcome guest speakers Josh McClenney, the NC Field Coordinator for Appalachian Voices, and Karen Beardon, the 350.org Triangle Coordinator.

Please join us and wear red if you have it.

Speak the Truth, Senator Tillis

Protesters, including US Senate candidate Erica Smith, outside Thom Tillis’ office.

Dear Senator Tillis,

The first two Representatives who endorsed the president’s campaign, Chris Collins and Duncan Hunter, have pled guilty and been indicted for corruption. The president’s lawyer (Michael Cohen), advisor (Roger Stone), campaign chair (Paul Manafort), national security advisor (Michael Flynn), campaign advisor (Rick Gates), and foreign policy advisor (George Papadopoulos) have all been indicted as well as many Russians who colluded with the president and his family in order to win the election.  (Just because he says over and over, “there was no collusion” does not make it true.)  Another one of the president’s lawyers, Rudy Giuliani, will likely be indicted any day now.

Meanwhile, cabinet officials Ryan Zinke, Ben Carson, Wilbur Ross, David Bernhardt, Robert Wilke, and Betsy Devos have all been embroiled in scandals.  The Attorney General of the United States is acting as this president’s personal lawyer, and the president continues to display a breathtaking contempt for the rule of law.  What kind of president advises people to ignore subpoenas?

You have been quoted as saying the president is doing a good job of energizing his base.  This explains your dishonest and obsequious behavior with regard to him.  We are protesting today because we are heartbroken over the ways that this president is ruining this country. A white nationalist in the White House is in control of immigration.  Every major foreign policy decision by the president benefits Russia, and GOP Representatives and Senators are parroting debunked conspiracy theories that originated with Putin. We are in a global climate emergency that is worsened daily by the president’s decisions and denial.  Meanwhile, while the tax cuts overwhelmingly benefited the rich, most Americans are struggling mightily simply to survive, and the president repeatedly cuts life-saving benefits like SNAP.   Affordable housing is disappearing.  Guns kill 100 Americans every day.

We demand that you represent the interests of the people of North Carolina, not only those who are being duped every day by Fox news and talk radio but also everybody else.  We demand that you face the truth, speak the truth, and save the country before it is too late.

Letters to the Senator

October 15, 2019

Dear Senator Tillis,

All over the world, indigenous people are fighting for their lives and fighting to save the earth. All over the world, people yearn for democracy and for justice. This past week, the president made a disastrous decision regarding Syria for no apparent reason, crushing the Kurdish people and accelerating the destruction of a part of the world that had achieved a fragile stability.

You have defended the president’s decision. Doesn’t it worry you that he did not consult anyone from the Pentagon or any foreign policy advisors or allies, but simply did this hideous and hugely consequential thing on a whim during a phone call with one of his favorite strongmen? Doesn’t it disturb you that now not only the Kurdish people but also our own troops are under attack, and the United States is weakened suddenly while all of this is in the interest of Russia, Syria, Iran, and ISIS? Why exactly are you allowing this to happen? Surely you know it is wrong.

Meanwhile, the greed and cruelty that seems to fuel the president is the same mindset that is destroying the earth. His destruction of the EPA, rollback of crucial environmental regulations, and contempt for the Paris agreement are rapid movements in the wrong direction at the very time when we absolutely must apply all of our energy into trying to save the earth for future generations. It is no longer possible to deny that the earth is becoming uninhabitable for increasing numbers of people each year because of carbon emissions and environmental destruction. If you would have town halls you would see that this is emerging as the number one concern among young people, and for good reason.

Please meet with your constituents. Represent the people of North Carolina, not the billionaires and corporations. It is not too late to do the right thing.
