TWT Gives: Sharing our Stimulus Checks

The TWT Care and Comfort Committee encourages all who have not been affected financially by the pandemic to consider sharing some or all of the funds that came to them from the US government in the form of the stimulus check.

A list of worthy North Carolina relief efforts can be found here, as well as the letter from the Care & Comfort Committee to the group.

Stop Family Separation

Protesters in front of Thom Tillis' office protesting the separation of families at the border. Yellow sign reads No Human Beings are Illegal

Family separation continues in North Carolina and at our borders because of the racist and cruel policies of the Trump Administration. Our goal is our biggest rally ever, with publicity. Please spread the word. ICE raids are increasing in North Carolina, and what is happening in our name on the Southern border is a crime against humanity.
Physicians for Human Rights has declared that family separation is a form of torture. Separation happens to families in many ways, including deportation, detention, the virtual disappearance of legal immigration, the abolition of our asylum system, and the camps on the Southern border. ICE raids are increasing in North Carolina. We hope to involve many organizations so that this can be a huge and well-publicized reminder to our communities that this Administration’s cruelty to migrants and undocumented people is something we will not tolerate. If you can help with publicity or communicating with other organizations and individuals who might be interested in joining us, please let us know.
You can help North Carolina families who are being affected by deportations through Siembra NC.

Speak the Truth, Senator Tillis

Protesters, including US Senate candidate Erica Smith, outside Thom Tillis’ office.

Dear Senator Tillis,

The first two Representatives who endorsed the president’s campaign, Chris Collins and Duncan Hunter, have pled guilty and been indicted for corruption. The president’s lawyer (Michael Cohen), advisor (Roger Stone), campaign chair (Paul Manafort), national security advisor (Michael Flynn), campaign advisor (Rick Gates), and foreign policy advisor (George Papadopoulos) have all been indicted as well as many Russians who colluded with the president and his family in order to win the election.  (Just because he says over and over, “there was no collusion” does not make it true.)  Another one of the president’s lawyers, Rudy Giuliani, will likely be indicted any day now.

Meanwhile, cabinet officials Ryan Zinke, Ben Carson, Wilbur Ross, David Bernhardt, Robert Wilke, and Betsy Devos have all been embroiled in scandals.  The Attorney General of the United States is acting as this president’s personal lawyer, and the president continues to display a breathtaking contempt for the rule of law.  What kind of president advises people to ignore subpoenas?

You have been quoted as saying the president is doing a good job of energizing his base.  This explains your dishonest and obsequious behavior with regard to him.  We are protesting today because we are heartbroken over the ways that this president is ruining this country. A white nationalist in the White House is in control of immigration.  Every major foreign policy decision by the president benefits Russia, and GOP Representatives and Senators are parroting debunked conspiracy theories that originated with Putin. We are in a global climate emergency that is worsened daily by the president’s decisions and denial.  Meanwhile, while the tax cuts overwhelmingly benefited the rich, most Americans are struggling mightily simply to survive, and the president repeatedly cuts life-saving benefits like SNAP.   Affordable housing is disappearing.  Guns kill 100 Americans every day.

We demand that you represent the interests of the people of North Carolina, not only those who are being duped every day by Fox news and talk radio but also everybody else.  We demand that you face the truth, speak the truth, and save the country before it is too late.

Impeachment and Immigration

Peaceful protest at Senator Tillis’ office immigration reform

We want Senator Tillis to support the impeachment of the president. Meanwhile the Senator is spending his time bragging about his opposition to “sanctuary cities,” and warning of crimes by immigrants. We know that immigrants are far less likely to commit crimes than naturalized citizens, and that the war on immigrants is a way that the president and his party distract us from his crimes and feed the racism of their base. Meanwhile, 5,400 children have been separated from their parents at the border (kidnapped by our government), child separation continues at an escalating rate, and the administration has virtually ended asylum and even legal immigration. We come together to resist the racism which is behind these policies, policies which cause lifelong trauma to children, heartbreak, ruined lives, and continued genocidal policies toward black and brown people. #OneSimpleQuestion

Stop the War on Immigrants

The president’s attacks on immigrants, especially those who are people of color, have continued to escalate with the help of the Supreme Court and the failure of the Senate to hold him accountable. We must stand up and demand an end to deportation, to the concentration camps, to for-profit detention centers, and to the separation of families. We must demand a clean DREAM act and an end to white supremacist policies and racist rhetoric. We must demand an end to the funding of this reign of terror.

The cruelty of the Trump Administration with regard to the treatment of immigrants has continued unabated.  This past week, an order was issued to deny visas for people who do not have health care coverage. This came as the Administration is preparing to implement a “public charge rule” to deny green cards and US citizenship to poor people.

The 325,000 undocumented people in North Carolina are threatened with raids.  50,000 people are being held by ICE or CBP, most in for-profit prisons. The human rights and constitutional rights of immigrants are routinely violated.  Despite the fact that immigrants are far less likely to commit crimes than naturalized citizens and contribute far more than they receive from the economy, yet the President announced that only 18,000 people will be allowed into the country from abroad next year.

Jeff Land of Carolina Jews for Justice, is among the speakers.  “ As Jews, we were taught to never let anything like the Holocaust happen again.  We know from our own history what happens next when people are targeted in this way.  Many of our ancestors narrowly escaped from conditions like what we are seeing today in concentration camps at the border and detention centers around the country.”

Letters to the Senator

October 8, 2019

Dear Senator Tillis,

Blatantly inviting or coercing foreign governments to help him get elected is a good reason to impeach the president, but his rhetoric and policy concerning immigrants is just as disturbing. Since he first announced his campaign, he has characterized Mexicans as criminals and worse, manipulating public sentiment in false and hideous ways. The truth is that only 1.8% of immigrants commit crimes, compared to 3% of naturalized citizens.

Meanwhile, there is a concerted effort by the White House to make people believe that immigrants are a drain on the economy when the opposite is true. Study after study has shown that immigrants put far more money into the economy than they take out. Undocumented people put 16 billion dollars into Social Security each year and will never be able to collect any of this money.

Every week there are efforts by the White House to terrorize undocumented people and restrict immigration. Constitutional and human rights violations of immigrants escalate daily. In the past few weeks alone, there have been repeated efforts by the Administration to severely limit immigration, by the “presidential declaration,” the “public charge” declaration, and the proposal to deny visas to immigrants who lack health care coverage.

North Carolina is home to about 325,000 undocumented people. They are our neighbors, colleagues, and friends. We are protesting today in solidarity with them and demanding that you stand up to this president’s cruelty and lies.

Stop the Cruelty, Stop the Lies

This past week, hundreds of migrant parents of children being treated with life-threatening diseases in US hospitals got letters telling them to leave the country. As Senator Mazie Hirono has said, it is as though the people in the white house make an effort to think up the cruelest thing possible every day. Meanwhile, the cruel indifference displayed in policy after policy is stunning. Please join us as we come together for our 137th consecutive weekly protest and feel free to spend a minute or two speaking to us about what you feel most strongly about – and how we can take an action.
