Tillis and Burr: Vote to Remove

If our Senators do not vote to remove the president from office, they are saying it is fine for him to use US military power to solicit foreign governments to help him get elected, and it is fine for him to cover it up and obstruct justice. We are tired of lies. Join us as we make our voices heard and make public support for impeachment and removal visible. #NotAboveTheLaw

We Demand a Real Impeachment Trial

December 24, 2019

Dear Senator Tillis,

We the people of North Carolina demand a real impeachment trial in the Senate, not the sham trial that Senator McConnell clearly prefers.  You will have to take an oath before this trial, so we expect you to be open to any outcome. Further, no one is above the law, so we expect that the president will not use presidential power to block witnesses, as he did in the House investigation.  We demand that Rudy Guliani, Mike Pompeo, and Nick Mulvaney all testify in the Senate trial. These are the people in the position to know the truth. If the president does not have anything to hide, if he did nothing wrong, why does he not want these witnesses to testify?

We expect you to be interested in the truth. We demand that you stand up to the president and to Senator McConnell and act in the interest of truth and justice.  We are tired of the cover up. We are outraged by the obstruction of justice by the president, the Attorney General of the United States, by Senator McConnell, and by you so far in this process.

And we continue to ask you to have a town hall.  The president’s campaign of disinformation mirrors that of Putin, and we are truly worried that you are more interested in falling into line with the cult of Trump than in doing your job. Consider your legacy in history.  It is not too late to do the right thing.

MoveOn Impeach and Remove

Dear Friends,

Our Raleigh Impeach and Remove event is set for Tuesday, December 17 at 5:30 in Bicentennial Plaza. The impeachment vote is scheduled for Wednesday, 12/18, but even if that schedule changes, we will still protest on Tuesday evening.

We are very excited to have some fantastic speakers, musicians and over 1500 attendees! We will start with a rally at 5:30, have a march (under 1 mile) around the Capitol Building or a vigil in the plaza and then a closing rally back in Bicentennial Plaza.

Please keep inviting people to this event. You can use this link to spread the word by email and social media.  Send it far and wide so people can find the event closest to them. On social media before and after the event, use the hashtag #NotAboveTheLaw. If you take pictures during the event, please send them to photos@moveon.org

The sun will be setting as we gather, so bring a flashlight if you have one. Signs and costumes are welcome. If you can’t get there at 5:30, no worries, we will be there until 7:30 at least.

Above all, we want to have a peaceful protest, one in which children and physically fragile people can be safe and we all feel comfortable. If there are counter protesters, don’t engage them. We also want to be respectful to the police. If we all are vigilant keeping each other safe and being welcoming and friendly, we will have a great rally.

Thank you for your support of democracy, the rule of law and our constitution at this crucial time in our country’s history. You are making public support for impeachment visible.

Please feel free to contact us with questions or concerns. You can also post questions on our facebook event. We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday!

Sincerely,

Karen, Mike, and Marci

Impeach and Remove the President

Please note that this is Tuesdays with Tillis’ weekly daytime event, not the MoveOn.Org event that will happen on Tuesday evening. Everyone is welcome at both, but the larger event will happen at 5:30 on Bicentennial Plaza.

On the day the articles of impeachment were presented last week, the president entertained the Russian foreign minister in the Oval Office. Our country has been attacked by a hostile foreign power which is being aided at the highest levels of our government. Only massive public pressure can both impeach and remove the president and begin to hold others accountable for the damage to our democracy and contempt for the Constitution. Meanwhile, an avowed white supremacist is in the White House directing immigration policy and 10,000 children are in concentration camps. Wall street is awash in cash and 140,000 Americans are living in poverty. The president’s policies accelerate the global climate crisis. Some would say capitalism is exploding into fascism. Please join us to demand that Senator Tillis honor his oath of office and represent the people of North Carolina, not just his wealthy and corporate donors. A retired Intelligence Analyst will brief us on the situation and lead our discussion.

[Raleigh, NC] — At 5:30 PM local time, on December 17th, the night before the U.S. House of Representatives votes to impeach Donald Trump for his high crimes and misdemeanors, activists will gather at Bicentennial Plaza as part of the nationwide “Nobody Is Above the Law” rallies. The rally and march in Raleigh will be one of about four hundred actions occurring nationwide.  Well over 1,000 people are expected.

The mobilization is part of a massive, grassroots effort to ensure Congress holds Donald Trump accountable for using military aid to pressure Ukraine to interfere in our 2020 elections. Protesters will demand that the House of Representatives fulfills its constitutional duty by impeaching Donald Trump and that the Senate remove him from office for attempting to rig the 2020 elections. Congress must show that no one—including the criminal in the White House—is above the law.

Protesters will gather at Bicentennial Plaza at 5:30pm for a rally, then a short march around the Capitol Building for those who are able (vigil for those who are not), then another rally at about 7:00pm.  There will be creative signs, costumes, songs, and chants.

“The impeachment inquiry has clearly shown that the president of the United States has used the power of his office to pressure a weaker foreign government to help him personally in the 2020 election. This abuse of power cannot go unchecked! Our Senators must do their job of defending the constitution,” said Karen Ziegler, lead organizer for the Tuesdays With Tillis group that has been rallying around Senator Thom Tillis’ Raleigh office for over 150 weeks.

Activists will use #NotAboveTheLaw to engage communities on social media. Information about other events can be found at Impeach.org. The link to the event in Raleigh is here.

Why Impeachment is Imperative

Protesters, including Lady Liberty Marching outside Thom Tillis’ office

The impeachment hearings have proved that this president used his office for personal gain, but his corruption is only a small part of how he is destroying America. His racist rhetoric and policies, destruction of the environment, retrograde actions on the climate, right-wing judges, cabinet appointments, and misogyny will be felt for decades to come. Massive public pressure can make a real difference.

The President Must Be Impeached

November 26, 2019

Dear Senator Tillis,

There is now overwhelming evidence that president Trump is acting under the influence of Putin. We all know why he is doing this. For years his finances have been entangled with organized crime and Russian oligarchs. This started years before the election, and it is for this reason that his foreign and domestic policy decisions are in Putin’s interest. This is completely plain to anyone who cares to look, and we are sure that you are aware of this. We know that you were briefed, as a Senator, on the fact that the Ukraine story was a lie cooked up by Putin. The fact that Trump is continuing to promote this lie on national television and in emails and advertisements is no longer surprising. We have come to expect lies and criminal behavior from this man. However the willingness of the Attorney General of the United States and of Senators including you to support and defend him is so horrifying that we must continue to protest, to write to you and call you, and to beg you to wake up.

Do you really expect us to believe that the honorable people who testified under oath are lying and the people who are breaking the law by ignoring subpoenas are telling the truth? Do you really want to support a president who exonerates a service member who has committed war crimes, destroying the morale and discipline of our troops and causing the Secretary of the Navy to resign in protest? Do you really want to support a president who endangers the national security of the United States with nearly every major decision he makes, when every decision is clearly in the interest of Mr. Putin?

Who are you serving, Senator Tillis? Have you been bought by Mr. Putin too? This president must be impeached. You must stop defending him before it is too late. Our country will not survive another year of this president and his reckless and criminal behavior.

Now We Really Need to Impeach Trump

Protesters at Senator Tillis Office. Signs say Democracy is under Attack and Impeach.

We have learned so much from the impeachment hearings; perhaps the most important thing we know now is that Trump is actively spreading disinformation which originated with Putin. He and his GOP allies have been caught in a Russian intelligence deception in the conspiracy theories about Ukraine. What to do about it? Our speaker is Aylett Colston, one of the most brilliant legal thinkers and activists in our community. #NoOneIsAboveTheLaw

It is not too late to do the right thing

November 19, 2019

Dear Senator Tillis,

Today we are coming to your office to demand that you stop lying to the people of North Carolina and stop defending this president and his criminal friends.  As a member of the Judiciary Committee and a United States Senator, your continued determination to defend the indefensible is shameful. You have told so many lies this week, like when you said that the Mueller report “found that there was no collusion and no obstruction.”  You know perfectly well that this is not true, and that this report detailed actual crimes by the president, some of them impeachable offenses.

You said, “The American people are tired of the House getting nothing done.”  On the contrary, the House has passed over 100 bills that the Senate is sitting on, including a crucial bill on election security.  All the Senate does is confirm extremist judges.

You said that the impeachment hearing is based on “secondhand knowledge.”  This is only true because the president and the state department have forbidden the firsthand people to testify.  They have demanded that people defy subpoenas, which is a crime. Evidence of the quid pro quo, and bribery, has now been backed up by multiple witnesses, and we all saw witness intimidation by the president in real time last week.

You said that the “American people” think the impeachment hearing is a waste of time, yet 70% of Americans believe that what the president did in the Ukraine was wrong.  You said that nothing wrong happened because the aid was released to the Ukraine. But you know perfectly well that the aid was released only after the whistleblower report became public, and after months of bipartisan pressure by multiple senators, representatives, and officials.

It is not too late for you to stop lying in a futile effort to save your job.  It is not too late to do the right thing. A president who uses his power for personal gain in a way that consistently undermines the national security of the United States deserves to be impeached.

Donald Trump pushed Ukraine to interfere in our 2020 election. He withheld U.S. military aid and a White House meeting to pressure Ukraine to launch a sham investigation into a 2020 political rival in order to hurt his candidacy.
That’s bribery and extortion. We are demanding that Senator TIllis stand up for the rule of law and stop defending the president, whose actions are indefensible.
